Mr. Hendricks's work will be on exhibit
during the month of November!  ~ peace  Smiley

Tributes in the picture for a portrait painter

The coming month may prove to be the homecoming Philadelphia-born painter Barkley L. Hendricks has long deserved.

Notable for stark, postmodern black-and-proud oil portraits, "Barkley L. Hendricks: Birth of the Cool" - his first career retrospective, on tour for the last two years - finally opened yesterday at his alma mater, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

And starting Nov. 6, Sande Webster Gallery hosts Hendricks' quietly dynamic Caribbean landscapes. In addition, on Nov. 12 "Walkin' With Walker: Narrative Photography of Barkley Hendricks" begins at the African American Museum, showing the 63-year-old North Philly native's observational edge with a camera.

At present, however, Hendricks - a longtime professor of art at Connecticut College in New London, where he has lived since 1972 - is more worried about healing than hometown plaudits.

"I had a run-in with a router, an unfortunate situation where I was cut to the bone," he says with a matter-of-fact chuckle.

Celebrating what made him famous - his life-sized portraits' mix of elegantly disposed black nationalism, realism, and pop art against solid matte backgrounds - might help him feel better.

National Museum of African Art Celebrates the 50th Anniversary of Nigeria’s Independence

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African Art will sponsor a two-year-long celebration marking the 50th anniversary of Nigeria’s independence. The largest and most ambitious undertaking in the museum’s history, “Nigeria: Then, Now and Forever” begins this fall and continues through 2011. It includes exhibitions, public programs and special events showcasing the culture, arts and people of Nigeria. First Lady of Nigeria Hajiya Turai Umaru Yar’ Adua and educator and philanthropist Camille Cosby are co-chairs.

Highlights of the celebration include a mid-career retrospective by Nigerian-British artist Yinka Shonibare, a film festival, the premiere of a new dance by The Washington Ballet’s Andile Ndlovu and a series of special events with U.S. and African leaders in the fields of art, entertainment, business and government.
