eating around the Carolinas
& Georgia gullah sea islands.
(lots of rice based dishes & seafood)
it's a fusion of african, french, spanish & native american
cooking techniques in the region.

she crab soup!
some of it's very similar to New Orleans type of food.
a gullah
"bog" is

similar to a Louisiana Creole chicken rice & sausage
etouffee or jambalaya, style.

most likely this gullah chicken purloo was prepared with smoked ham, sausage & chicken - sometimes with chicken rice , smoked pork & dry peas or bean or or an all rice, spice, seafood, mussels, kinda affair.
===============
a carolina seafood perlow, they cook up rice with a lot of seafood in it also.
================================
if you see gullah
perlow
or
purloo
on the menu (as it often is)
- it's very similar to
pelau/ pilau
,
interchangeable - sometimes like paella , cooking style - most of the time very delicious! .
other that that?
pone is pone
cobbler is cobbler
gumbo is gumbo
oxtails stew is oxtails
& butter beans are butter beans.
the greens not calalloo
but are collard or turnip greens
(seasoned slightly different, often
using smoked ham & hot peppers, using
produce & greens that's indigenous to that area -
If you are vegetarian, tell them so
& request for it be prepared that way
.[vegetarian style/w out meat ] - they will often have it .)
if You are a fish seafood lover? (like My Husband?)
they have plenty of that, too!
their variety of brew
ginger beer is a hard spicy kind of ginger beer.
They bake lots of desserts!
We found some the People to be very
friendly & helpful, once you get into
the flow of their quick dialect/gullah !
We enjoy our visits to Gullah Country
but then
again We really liked Mardi Gras
in New Orleans too ( the
culture, zydeco, beignets & pralines)

Amadu Massally hasn't been back to his native Sierra Leone in more than 20 years, but he felt right at home when he visited a Hilton Head Island beach in 2006 with Gullah historian and community leader Emory Campbell.

I've attended an interesting exhibit on this ( carolina face jugs)
i found this really interesting,
imho, because barbados has an old craft of
pottery making ( some of it going back to the
arawaks & carib post-saladoid
( i've blogged a little about this craft) - my Mom collects
alot of modern Bajan pottery & checking out the old
style pottery with her in museums, is always interesting! )
This is a different from this type,
but in the Upper SC. region /bordering
NC, there is a history of
recently freed enslaved african americans made
really interesting pottery face jugs in the 1800s,
specifically a potter name dave.

http://www.blackpotter.com/
http://www.edgefieldpottery.com/
also check out the ornate SC gates & ironwork,
the history of africans iron smithing & creating gates -
surrounding the plantations & grand old houses- many were
made by skilled Black Artisans from the 1700s onward.

a very interesting region!
on a side note UPDATE

Media-Newswire.com) - PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University]
Internationally acclaimed author and activist Ngügï wa Thiong’o, will visit Brown University for an historic public conversation with author George Lamming and a reading from Ngügï’s latest novel Wizard of the Crow. Considered one of Africa’s most accomplished and prominent novelists, the Kenyan writer is a distinguished professor of English and comparative literature and director of the International Center for Writing and Translation at University California–Irvine.
On Friday, Nov. 7, 2008, Ngügï will have a public conversation with George Lamming, distinguished Caribbean novelist and visiting professor of Africana studies at Brown. The event, “Politics and the Novel: Conversations in Africana Writing," begins at 4 p.m. in the Salomon Center for Teaching, De Ciccio Family Auditorium ( Room 101 ). This event is the third in theConversations in Africana Writing series, hosted by the Department of Africana Studies. To have these two premier writers in conversation with each other is an historic moment in literature, says Anthony Bogues, chair of Brown’s Department of Africana Studies.
“Ngügï and Lamming represent two seminal writers in African and Caribbean literatures,” said Bogues, Harmon Family Professor. “They are both masters of what may be called the “political novel" — that is, the novel in which plot and characters weave a set of stories and narratives in which we, the reader, gain glimpses of the structural politics of a specific moment and nation.”

Dem 3 Jamaican Tenors offer 'toe-curling' ballads
Call them the Three Tenors with an island twist.
Today, Dem 3 Jamaican Tenors will take concertgoers on a musical journey that promises to bring romance, a dose of humor and wide array of ballads to the Broward Center. This musical celebration stars three generations of smooth Jamaican tenors: David Reid, Cecil Cooper and Steve Higgins.
The singers demonstrate the romantic side of Jamaican culture and tell stories through passionate love songs, Jamaican folk songs, Italian love ballads, jazz numbers and Broadway standards.
"A lot of Jamaican women think that Jamaican men are not romantic," said Higgins, of Davie. "We would like to prove them wrong."

BLACK HERITAGE ART SHOW !
@ CONVENTION CENTER
rtists and craftspeople from around the country will gather at the Baltimore Convention Center this weekend for the 14th annual Black Heritage Art Show, which celebrates African-American culture in a wide range of expressions.
Since it began in the Fellowship Hall of Baltimore's New Psalmist Baptist Church in 1995, when six artists attracted several hundred patrons, the event has grown into a three-day event that draws thousands of visitors and showcases more than 100 visual, literary and performing artists, including musicians, poets, dancers and fashion designers.
Visual artists range from painters, sculptors and lithographers to makers of jewelry, ceramics and handmade dolls. Maryland Institute College of Art graduate Larry "Poncho" Brown and Baltimore native Karen Buster are among the exhibitors. Out-of-town artists include Stu McLean of Atlanta and Charles Bibbs of Los Angeles.

South Florida Libraries continue to Celebrate Jamaican Art and Culture during Black History Month
MIAMI - As Black History Month activities heat up, libraries in the South Florida community continue to celebrate the Jamaican culture and heritage with several activities scheduled at various locations.
Jamaican artist and sculptor, Susan Alexander, will present her publication ‘Jamaican Journey’ on Saturday (Feb. 7) at 11 a.m. at the Broward College South Regional (SR/BC) Library in Pembroke Pines.
The 108-page publication is a presentation of her works of paintings and sculpture, twinned with relevant poetry and prose of memorable scenes of her homeland, Jamaica.
On Monday (Feb. 16) at 6 p.m., Jamaican artist, Karl Jerry Craig, will present a lecture on his work and experience at an artist’s reception at the SR/BC Library campus. He is the former Director of the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts in Kingston.
Currently, some 32 pieces of his works are being displayed at the Library campus throughout the entire month.
Another Jamaican artist, Mr. Colin Campbell, will also mount an exhibition of some 12 pieces of his work at a launch reception next Wednesday (Feb. 11), at the St. Lawrence Gallery, North Ocean Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale.
The exhibition, which will run through the end of February, will showcase some 12 pieces of original oil paintings and gyclees of seascapes, reminiscent of locations in Jamaica and South Florida. Proceeds from monetary donations will be presented to a local South Florida charity.
The Florida-based folkloric group ‘Jamaica Folk Revue’ will present a series of concerts starting tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 11) at 1:30 p.m. at the Coral Reef Library in Palmetto Bay. Performances will include selections of song, dance and drama.
