Sampsons from Jamaica
Sep 13th, 2009, 2:12pm

My grandfather and all his relatives claimed that they were born in Canada and that their parents were from Scotland.

The truth is that they were born in Jamaica in the late 1800s, early 1900s.

After the death of their father, the children of Charles Abraham sailed from Port Morant aboard the United Fruit Company steamer SS Admiral Sampson in 1907, arriving in Boston.

They settled in Toronto, Canada. They were "mulatto" and Hebrew, but assumed the identities of white protestants in Canada.

They left one girl behind because she was "negro" at birth. Quite an amazing story - I discovered this about a month ago. I am looking for anyone who can assist me to find long lost relatives.

Their family name is Sampson. They are from the May Hill-Alligator Pond area. There are references to land they owned called "Gaza" which was sold on the death of Charles Abraham Sampson. Here are the family members:

Charles Abraham SAMPSON b. about 1822
Georgiana Windett b. Sept 4 1841

Child:
John Charles Augustus SAMPSON b: 1858 in Jamaica
Alice Maria PARSONS b: 4 APR 1867 in Manchester, Middlesex, Jamaica
Children:
1. Sidney Oliver SAMPSON b: 21 JAN 1903 in Royal Flat, Jamaica
2. x Birth Certif. Lilian SAMPSON b: 28 APR 1890 in Jamaica
3. x Birth Certif. Ida Maude SAMPSON b: 10 MAY 1892 in Jamaica
4. Nell SAMPSON b:???? in Jamaica
5. Catherine Imogene SAMPSON b: 1893 in Jamaica
6. My grandfather John Eustace Burke SAMPSON b: 9 FEB 1895 in Comfort, Manchester, Jamaica
7. Franklin Augustus SAMPSON b: 1906 in Royal Flat, Jamaica
8. Unnamed SAMPSON b: 17 JUN 1891 in Royal Flat, Manchester

Any help to find lost relatives, information about any of the family members and what they did, where they lived, would be very much appreciated.

Also, if anyone is living in the May Hill - Alligator Pond area, I would appreciate any photos and/or stories of the private Jewish cemetery at Rowes Corner, on the former estate called Gaza.

Cheers!

Thanks for the welcome.
I have already posted something on my-island-jamaica.com. Also I already have a subscription to jamaicafamilysearch.com. I found some information.
But I am looking for photos of the Jewish cemetery at the location formerly known as Gaza, at Rowes Corner, near May Hill. If you know anyone who can take some pictures and send them to me I would appreciate it. Also I don't see any photos of areas that my ancestors came from - Royal Flat,Comfort, Gaza, etc. Thanks.

Hi dossettd, I think the best thing you could do is actually going to Jamaica and get the info first hand? good luck. Wink

Yes, I agree. However I am trying to put some pictures and other documentation together  in order to make a proposal for a miniseries docudrama-style here. If I get funding, then I can bring HD camera equipment etc. and film the on-site research as it happens. That would be better and more exciting than just showing up and taking some pictures...

Just FYI I'm putting together a short film - a 1 minute teaser/trailer as part of the package. It's being filmed in Kingston -my Kingston, in Ontario. The scene will be the Gaza estate and the dock at Port Morant.

Sounds interesting and would love to see the finished product.

Yes, I'll post it on youtube. For now, if you know anyone with a digital camera who can take pictures of the Jewish cemetery at Gaza at Rowes Corner, the town of Comfort, Manchester, Royal Flat, and Alligator Pond, please ask them to send me the pictures and/or post them here. BTW I have pictures of Alligator Pond but I'm not interested in the beach "touristy" pictures. Thanks.
p.s. I know that there are living relatives in the Alligator Pond area but I have not been able to contact them (through the Internet, of course - long distance to Jamaica is $$$$$$$$$$).
