ALTHEA HEWITT

Having signed a lucrative three-album deal with one of the world's largest distributors of Jamaican recorded products, VP Records International ( New York ), Althea Hewitt has just completed her debut album.

Althea started performing in her father's band long before her teens. She grew up to represent her high school, Camperdown High in the Teen Star Search competitions that took place during the 90s, which turned out many Jamaican recording artistes.

Althea has also modeled the creations of many or Jamaica 's fashion houses. She has also done background vocals, in the studio and on stage for a number of recording artistes, including Norris Man, Bushman, Richie Spice, Colin Levy, Chrisinti, Chaka Demus and Pliers, the late Garnet Silk and Sony Records recording artiste, Jamaica's very own Diana King.

Althea and Diana opened for American Rhythm and Blues singer Jeffery Osbourne at his performance in Jamaica . In 2005, she performed in Cayman with Pluto Shervington, Boris Gardener, Ernie Smith, Dwight Pinkney, including some of Jamaica' best musicians.

Hewitt was apart of the popular female group 4 th Street Sistas, which won the Best Performing Artiste Award in 2001.

She has also had the opportunity to work with well known producers like Fattis Burrell and Donovan Germaine. She also did the vocal lead on Mr Vegas' recording of ‘Juicy' and sang jazz at The Ritz Carlton, Rose Hall Montego Bay, Jamaica. What was agreed upon to be a one night performance, turned out to last a year and a half.

In 2003, Althea did successful tour to Europe with Bushman. More recently in June 2005, she toured Australia and New Caledonia , performing with Max Romeo and the Third World band. Althea was chosen by the Jamaican Tourist Board and the Jamaican Embassy in Brussels to do a two-and-a-half week tour of Brussels , Belgium . There she did a series of performances.

“First, as an upcoming artiste, I would like to pay respect to other female artistes like Phyllis Dillon, Marcia Griffiths and Cynthia Schloss. I am thinking if including some of their work on my album. I believe I have a responsibility to set a positive example. So when I'm putting my lyrics together, I also try to cover matters concerning the affairs of women, women in the music industry, how we see our communities and how we interact with the men in our lives,” said Althea when commenting on the inspiration for her album.
