Stephen Wilson, an aspiring entertainer, went through his Thesaurus in search of a stage name. He adopted the catch phrase ‘literally, musically bad!' then stumbled upon the word ‘eloquent' meaning fluent, expressive and articulate. He thought to himself, “This isn't what I am yet, but what I'm working to be…”
Eloquence , a 27-year-old Aquarian, was born to Wincebal Wilson and Virginia Warren on January 28, 1980. He spent most of his younger years living on March Pen Road, Spanish Town with his mother and three other siblings. At age seven, he moved to Kingston. Due to difficulties with family, he and his mother moved to Waterford in Portmore, then to Marverly, to Red Hills and back.
“I remember my mother telling me stories and showing me pictures of how I was as a child, playing in the yard, making noises with different things. She made me my first musical instrument with a sardine tin and some fishing line.” While attending Russeau Primary School, Stephen's first performance was at a barbecue held at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre. He performed ‘I Will Survive' by Papa San.
Stephen moved on to secondary education at Calabar High, using his spare time writing songs and making beats. However, it was only in his upper-sixth form year that he began to take music seriously. After leaving Calabar in 1995, he went on to pursue music.
With a strong zeal for music, he sought professional advice, which came from Delroy ‘Fatta' Pottinger, an engineer at Anchor Recording Studio. This advice went a long way as it lead to him writing more songs and spent more time in the studio, perfecting his art. He also made dubs for sound systems, performed at clubs and special events. His first professional recording was done on a rhythm he made called ‘Almost There' . He also recorded songs for himself and other young artistes on the rhythm.
During the interview with DAFLEX , Eloquence fondly remembers his ups and downs in his musical career. “My most embarrassing moment would probably be when I was in a voice training session with Jamaican baritone, Barry Williams. Going up the scale, we got to the highest note… and I cracked!” he laughed. “My most memorable moment I would say, is seeing my music video on television for the first time.”
Currently, Eloquence is signed to the Heavy Artillery Recordz label, for which he has a song out called ‘Evil Cannot Touch Me' . He is now working on other material and putting finishing touches to his self-titled debut album, soon to be released.
“Just believe in self and be positive,” is the advice he gives to young artistes as himself. Eloquence, taking hold of his dreams…literally!
