Jerry D

By: Coriandre Lawrence

An eccentric, exciting and fun loving character Jerry D THE vibes Master insists that the “D” in his name stands for dangerous although his Mom says that it means Davy.
Jerry explained that he was never into radio but he did have panache for drama, or anything fun that drew attention to him while at Campion High. Jerry thought that Mass Communication was a good bet for him, and as result he enrolled at the University of the West Indies where he pursued a diploma in Mass Communication. He then went on to widen his knowledge and attended The University of Technology for two years.

In 1990 he applied for a job at RJR and was employed as a trainee announcer and in 1992 made his first on air appearance.
He distinguishes himself as the “Vibe Master” giving you energy 24/7. He describes this package as a hybrid fusion of entertainment. Along with having fans from far and wide he tries to create an entertainment niche, which speaks to particular group of people. These fans are not necessarily bound by the parameters of popular club music and streets savvy tunes.

Watching Jerry select music and captivating his audience with his one of a kind voice, one can see he is truly a master of his art. He doesn’t credit himself for the skills he possesses though. He says that he has learnt much through observing some of the great radio personalities such as Barry G and Ritchie D. He also added that he admires Paula-Ann Porter, Kurt Riley, Troy Porter, “Jenny Jenny” and especially Ron Muschette for his natural flow and effervescence.

When in the studio he creates an ambience that is synonymous with his program. He prides himself in bringing his audience close to him. He states that though one may be well engulfed by radio life he warns “ your life has to be separate and apart from radio”. He emphasizes this by pointing out that when in the studio or on a show he is Jerry D “The Vibes Master”, but in the supermarket or on the street, he is just Jerry, who enjoys life’s offering like anybody else.
I delved deeper into Jerry’s mind by asking him, where he sees himself in five years. “ I hope to own a media house that will revolutionalize entertainment and radio which will eventually create a niche market in this sector” he replied. His advise to aspiring Disk Jocks and Announcers is: “Read aloud and find someone you admire in the field and try to pattern their style, but stray from imitating. Eventually you will develop your own sound.”
