Jonathan 'John Hype' Prendergast, the well-known
dancing prodigy, has overcome many trials and tribulations
in his life, as well as in his career. He admitted
that, although things are not the same, "Everyting
cris. People still a cry fi mi same way."
His challenges have made him a stronger person. He
has taken a huge step in his life, one that he had
not expected. "Each of your troubles is a stepping
stone," he added.
Since he is mainly on tours overseas with fellow
artiste Beenie Man, he has taken precautions by having
bodyguards with him when he appears at party scenes.
For the summer, "mi ave bay new tings fi mi
fans dem," he said. His latest dance move, 'Global',
was named by Fire Links, and was first released at
Village Café. It has been featured in Dancehall
circles, such as Hot Mondays. The dance is a simple
two-step. "Yuh swing yuh hand, same way yuh do
di two-step wid yuh foot, an' just rotate same way
like di globe," he explained.
For John, his dream was to become a dancer, and it
has now become his destiny. "Mi dey bout fi save
dancing, nu fi kill it," he stated. His dream
is to bring our culture of dancing globally, so that
everyone can appreciate it as they have done with
reggae music and dancehall.
He has also explored his talents by recording a few
tracks. The first was a counteraction, 'Roses Mi Did
Dey' against the late Bogle's 'All Dem Dey'. Since
the death of Bogle, he has released 'Rich Back', in
which he tells his fans not to worry, because things
are up once again for him. Also, he will release his
new track, titled 'Holiday', on the 'Holiday' Rhythm,
and a brand new dance of the same name, to be released
this summer.
I see the crystal rain fall,
And the beauty of dancehall.
(Two lines from John Hype's Holiday)
On June 7, in New York, John will be showcasing his
talent to his fans, by giving the crowd "the
full package". Not only will he be dancing, but
he will also be singing his songs that he recorded
in the studio.
Despite his obstacles, he still loves his community
and would one day give a helping hand to his community,
by providing employment to its members, and by also
restoring the love and unity there.
