NESBETH

By: Kerry-Ann Bercher, Go-Local Jamaica Writer

•  Name: “The name is Greg Nesbeth. While I was attending Charlie Smith High, to my friends at the time, my surname was unusual. Everyone called me ‘Nesbeth' so I kept the name to remind me of the friends who encouraged me to do music.”

•  Growing Up and Family Life.: “I grew up in Kingston 11 which is Waterhouse, Kingston12 on Maxfield Avenue and Kingston13 in Arnette Gardens. For some strange reason the Kingstons came one after the other!” he laughs. “I grew up with my mom and dad who struggled to make ends meet but ensured that I got what I needed. I attended Maxfield Park Primary after which I attended Kingston Senior. I went to Glengoffe High for a year then I moved on to Charlie Smith High. Growing up was rough but it has really molded me into a strong person.”

•  Why did you choose music as a career? “My father, whom I was living with in the states when I was much younger, owned a sound system called Premo International. His other sons were DJ's with the sound system. I always loved the way the crowd reacted to their performances so that was when my love for music began. During my earlier years of pursuing music as a career, it was the encouragement of friends that kept me going despite the hardships of the music industry. I decided not the let them down.”

•  What do you enjoy doing apart from music? “I love playing football. It's good exercise and it relieves stress. Apart from football, I love making the people around me happy by doing whatever I can for them. There are times when people push you to the limit but I always try to keep a firm head.”

•  What label are you signed to? “Currently, I'm signed to No Doubt Records, owned by Kemar ‘Flava' McGregor. We are working on some new tracks like ‘Friend Killer' and ‘Guns Out' on the RubaDub rhythm (not yet released). He is also the producer of my hit single ‘Board House Bun Down' which is on 15 different charts including Richie B's Jamaica Music Countdown.”

•  Performances: “I've gotten the opportunity to grace the Sumfest stage which has always been a dream of mine. My most memorable performance was in St. Kitts. After performing a solo set, all the performers joined me onstage to perform Bob Marley's ‘One Love'. During the performance, the rain began to drizzle; it was like soft dew. After the performance, the rain stopped. I took it as a blessing because that, to me, isn't a normal occurrence. I am booked for Sting, East Fest, shows for charity and a number of shows overseas.”

•  Your Inspiration: “My music is uplifting and realistic. It is music that everyone can listen to and look up to. I do my music from my heart. I believe in the 4 D's: Discipline, Determination, Dedication and Desire. I'm using my music to help make the world a better place.”
