Spice

by Don-Reece Edwards

Grace "Spice" Hamilton was born at the Spanish Town Hospital, and grew up in Old Braeton, St. Catherine. She attended Braeton Junior High School, and later, St. Catherine High School.

Seen as a hardcore individual in the eyes of the public, she describes herself as a moderate person, nice, caring, loving, and one who relates easily with others. Persons recognize her as a down-to-earth person. She is beautiful on the inside, as well as charming on the outside, although she considers herself miserable at times.

Her friends, in a group called Gillodean, gave her the name "Spice". Whenever she was not present with her female friends at a party, they would ask, "Where is the spicy one?" Spice would be the one to give the "zing" to her group.

Spice praises Professor Nuts, who inspired her to get started in the music business, four years ago. She started performing at local stage shows in her community and also its environs. She also thanks Baby Cham, because he is the reason she is still in the business today.

Throughout her career, she has performed at various stage shows, both locally and overseas, the biggest of which was Sting 2003, where she received overwhelming applause and shouts from the patrons.

She is currently signed with Madd House Entertainment, which she recognizes as the best thing to ever happen to her. "Love the vibes, things going good," she said, adding that she "like the feed back". She is working on some singles, as well as more smashing videos, which will hit the road soon, and planned tours, both locally and overseas.
She spends most of her times on the road, especially on the Fort Clarence and Hellshire beaches, where she enjoys relaxing and getting new ideas for her hardcore lyrics, whether from past experiences, or just by interacting with her friends. She also shares an interest in acting and swimming. She would love to be an actress one day.

Excerpt of Q & A from the interview:

Where do you see Dancehall in the future?
"Presently, Dancehall is doing well. A lot of crossover happening. Bigger and better things will happen for Dancehall. Everybody will get the chance to experience what Bob Marley had experienced with the nation."

Do you consider yourself a role model?
"Yes! Often, ladies approach me and say that the songs are true, and they can relate to them. I am representing the ladies. I am speaking on their behalf."

Most embarrassing moment?
"Once, during a stage show in my community. The stage was made of plyboard. While performing, the stage gave way and I fell through. This happened back in 2001."

Most memorable moment?
"My first time performing at Sting. De crowd call mi back bout five times. It was mi first major stage show."

What would you want to say concerning the violence in our community?
"Poverty is the main cause of violence. The Government needs to address the root of the problem, which is poverty. Instead of building more prisons for the youths they need to build more training centers for them to learn or have a trade for them to have an income. People have needs and wants as well, and if no jobs are in place, then they will continue to rob and kill. Give dem work an tek dem off di streets."
