SORREL WITH GINGER- A Nutricious Delight
(Nov-13-2007)

It’s a pleasurable Christmas tradition enjoyed by many all over the Caribbean, with a refreshing touch of ginger and sometimes the ever welcome splash of white rum.It is so delicious that many crave second and even thirds and most persons dare not transgress the tradition of having sorrel with their every meal for the Christmas season. While many in Jamaica enjoy sorrel with ginger for its delicious taste and refreshing appeal, few know of the varied nutrients that it provides. But there’s greater news since Tru- Juice Sorrel with Ginger is already bottled with goodness and on shelves for the Christmas season, thereby giving consumers another reason for enjoying this nutritious delight.

Unknown to several persons, sorrel is from a group of plants known as neutraceuticals which can enhance human health.Dr. Stephen Defelice, founder and chairman of the Foundation for Innovation in Medicine defines nutraceuticals as “any substance that may be considered a food or part of a food which in addition to its normal nutritive value provides health benefits including prevention of disease”. These neutraceuticals have been associated with the prevention and or treatment of at least four life-threatening diseases - cancer, diabetes, heart disease and hypertension.

Sorrel also contains a wide range of vitamins and minerals including vitamin C, Calcium, Niacin, Riboflavin and a group of compounds called Flavonoids.A fact sheet from the Scientific Research Council points out that In addition to giving sorrel its deep red colour flavanoids are now being recognized as a powerful antioxidant which scavenges the body of free radicals that can cause deadly diseases if they are not removed. Flavanoids present in sorrel may be a useful deterrent against certain types of cancer and help to enhance the body’s immune system in general. This is supported by studies conducted by the Northern Caribbean University, Jamaica, which revealed that sorrel could kill certain types of cancer cells.

While sorrel has its share of great health benefits, the addition of ginger only makes for a more nutritious deal.Ginger has long been known as a very healthy food. It has anti-cancer properties and is recognised as healthy by both modern and ancient systems of medicine.

Scientists have also come to agree on ginger being one of the best foods you can eat, especially when you have a cold.Ginger is also effective in relieving varied forms of nausea such as that related to car sickness and most forms of upset Stomach.Ginger has also been shown to cleanse and thin the blood, thus positively affecting the heart and almost every other organ in the body.

So this Christmas when you drink Tru-Juice’s Sorrel with Ginger, rest assured, you’ll be enjoying a traditional beverage with delicious flavour and nutritious benefits. So now you have an even greater reason for enjoying this great Jamaican favourite, knowing that with each sip your taste buds will tingle, while your body enjoys an overflow of nutritious goodness.
