Children of the Prospect and Land Settlement communities were presented with back-to-school supplies valued at $70,000 during a fair held in Port Antonio recently.
More than 150 children between ages 4 and 11 years were presented with note books, pencils, crayons and other items, in preparation for the new school year, which begins on Monday, September 6.
The event, organised by the Prospect Community Neighbourhood Watch Association, in Port Antonio, was aimed at assisting the children with educational supplies, as well as fostering improved relations among the residents.
Constable Leron Mattison of the Police Community, Safety and Security Branch, in Port Antonio, said the Neighbourhood Watch Programme was not only about protecting the community from criminal elements, but also about developing unity among the adjoining communities and creating social programmes that will allow greater interaction between the residents.
He urged the citizens to "come on board and make a difference in the reduction of crime, and the development of your communities."
President of the Prospect Community Neighbourhood Watch Association, Devon Lowe, said he was pleased with the response so far, and hoped that members of the communities will continue to support the group.
Cynthia James and Loureen Grant, residents of Land Settlement, said they were pleased with the programme, and also for the assistance they received for their children.
During the fair, the children participated in a spelling competition, among other activities, while the parents played dominoes and engaged in other social events.
The fair was sponsored by the business community in Port Antonio.
