Three corporate sponsors join with GoLocal Jamaica for schools website competition

Written By:

Three corporate sponsors have joined with GoLocal Jamaica to provide prizes for the Show Your Community To The World Competition. The sponsors are AAMM Co-operative Credit Union, Food For The Poor and One Stop Computers.

AAMM Cooperative Credit Union is a teacher-oriented institution with some 8,000 members island-wide. The credit union, which has been operating since 1960, was formerly called the Association for Assistant Masters and Mistresses, a term, which referred to high school teachers at the time.

Now registered as AAMM, the credit union has also a registered a number of successes. Between 1999 and 2002 AAMM has gained three Credit Union of The Year awards, within its category, as well as a Credit Union Of The Year runner-up prize. With its head office based in Kingston, AAMM also has windows in Mandeville and Portmore.

The "Show Your Community To The World"  school's website competition, is encouraging schools islandwide to highlight their communities, and build websites. Schools such as St. Mary High pictured here, stand to gain great prizes. AAMM Co-op, Food For The Poor and One Stop Computers are partnering with Go-local Jamaica as official sponsors.

The other competition sponsor, Food For The Poor ministers to spiritually renew impoverished people throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. Established in 1982 the organisation’s goals are to improve the health, economic, social and spiritual conditions of the men, women and children.

Food For The Poor raises funds and provides direct relief assistance to the poor, usually by purchasing specifically requested materials and distributing them through the churches and charity organizations already operating in areas of need. In this way, the organization serves the poor with dignity and ensures the most appropriate use of donors' funds. Food For The Poor in Jamaica is currently celebrating its 20th anniversary. Its office is located in Ellerslie Pen, Spanish Town.

The third sponsor, One Stop Computer's Ltd. was founded in 1999, and is the success story of three Jamaican boys from a poor background, whose single mother migrated to Canada in order to support her sons. They eventually joined their mother, pursued a Canadian education, and returned to Jamaica to start up One Stop Computer's Ltd.

The company is one of Jamaica's leading suppliers of computer systems, computer parts and accessories as well as business services. The large show room based at the Island Life Mall in New Kingston, has many different products on display, in a bid to assist customers in making informed purchase decisions. The business services include faxing, laminating, photocopying, and secretarial services.Customers have access to eight (8) computers, fully equipped with the latest programs, for the design and print of their own professional documents. Customers can also use the systems to browse the Internet, in a comfortable shopping environment.

These sponsors are pleased to be associated with the Show Your Community To The World Competition, as the competition’s aim is to encourage secondary school students to develop and maintain community-based websites.

Under this initiative each participating school is given space on the Go-Jamaica server to showcase their communities, using articles and photographs.

According to Hope McMillan, Go-Local Jamaica Project Manager, the competition should excite both teachers and students alike.Go-Local Jamaica is inviting schools to create community websites, and under the rules of the competition they will be charged to make sure that they are maintained and updated with community information regularly. The competition begins September 22, and schools may register by logging on to go-localjamaica.com.
