What began as a vacation, turned into a vocation.
When a young Italian decided to see the world and chill for a while after college, he ended up in Negril, Jamaica. While revelling in the experience, he saw the opportunity to establish a business, something that definitely was not included in the Jamaican landscape - Italian ice cream.
It’s not that Jamaica did not have tonnes of ice cream, locally made and imported, but nowhere could you find authentic Italian ice cream. He marvelled at the variety of fruits that could be used to manufacture the product and create a unique treat, and noted Jamaicans' love for sweets. So, with this in mind, he headed back to Italy and enrolled himself in a program that taught him how to make ice cream.
Fast forward four years later. Valerio Ferrari now manages a well-established ice cream business. La Bella Italia, translated ‘the Beautiful Italy’, now has five shops open across the island: Norman Manly International Airport, Kingston; Junction St. Elizabeth; Mandeville, and two in Negril. Soon to come will be one in Ocho Rios, St. Ann. In addition, the ice cream is distributed in over 14 supermarkets in varying sizes.
Ferrari has managed to do more than he imagined in a short time. Now, fine Italian Ice cream or Gelat can be found across the island and hopefully soon across the Caribbean. La Bella Italia utilizes the great-tasting, tree-ripened, fresh fruits of Jamaica, with their extra-rich tastes as flavoring for this rich, but healthy ice cream. The Gelat ice cream is richer than most ice creams available commercially, and include nine fruit flavors of the line of 27 flavors available, namely Lemon, Sour Sop, Banana, Pumpkin, Papaya, Coconut, and Ginger.

Not to be left out are those on a sugar-free and fat-free diet, who can also indulge in the goodies, with fantastic tasting Sherbet in varied flavours, which also utilize fresh Jamaican fruits, such as Otaheite Apple, Watermelon, Jackfruit, Naseberry, or Tamarind. And you can really taste the fruit.
How do they create these delectable sugar-free treats, you may wonder? The natural sweetness of Jamaican fruit, with a little fructose concentrate thrown in. That means even diabetics can safely indulge.
So don’t wait…hurry to your closest La Bella Italia ice cream store and indulge your senses in sweet flavours.
