Our Community - Orange Hill

Our Community - Orange Hill

Written By: Shanique Vaccianna and Roxanne Shelton

Hi,

We are Shanique and Roxanne two of the students who attend the Little London High School and we would like to talk about our community.

The name of our community is Orange Hill which is located in Westmoreland, Jamaica, West Indies.  It is about six miles south west of Little London.  As the name suggests, our community is situated on a hill and it overlooks the beautiful tourist resort of Negril.  There are many beautiful houses in Orange Hill.  What stands out most about Orange Hill is the Jurassic Park.  Everything in this Park is made from old metal.  Some of these include, snakes, crocodiles, swing, skating board etc.  People from all over Jamaica come to visit the Park.  A photographs of the Park is included in this essay.

The churches in the community were built because there was one individual of that denomination living in the community.  We both attend different churches. Shanique attends the Orange Hill Assembly of God, while Roxanne attends the Orange Hill Wesleyan Holiness.  Mr. Eusah Jackson was the first Wesleyan Holiness member in the community.  He helped to build the church in 1968.  It is a beautiful churc.  Mr. Jeremiah Ewen was the first member of the Assembly of God Church in Orange Hill.  He also assisted in erecting a beautiful church.  This church was built in 1983.  Services in these churches are vibrant which attract the large number of young people who comprise the membership.

Orange Hill is a quite community and has a cool climate even in the summer months.  People usually live to a good old age in my community.  The two oldest persons in the community are Eslyn Myrie who is ninety years old and Nemiah Bermmer who is one hundred and two years old.  The people in Orange Hill are caring and kind.

The major means of transportation is motor bikes, known as Bike Taxi.

My community is located about four miles from Negril Spot.  The tourist resort town of Negril provides employment for many of the people in my community.
