Crystal Axe to headline women's concert Claudia Gardner - Gleaner Writer (Jun-26-2007) Hanover's Germany-based reggae singer, Crystal Axe, is to headline the second staging of the Hanover Women in Concert fund-raiser on Sunday, June 24. According to Angela Haye, principal of the Hanover Educational Institute (HEI), the event, like last year, is being staged in a bid to garner funds for undertaking improvement works at the Rural Services for Children with Disabilities (RSCD) Centre in Lucea, as well as at the HEI, which is a registered non-government organisation. "We will be incorporating more of the local people. We are also targeting more of the business community for sponsorship of various forms. Last year we had a little over 400 people. We are looking to target at least 1,000 this year," Ms. Haye said. "We are adding giveaways this year. There will be more excitement, more fun and more laughter." Drumming, dub poetry, dramatic presentations and singing are some of the talents, which will be showcased by women of all age from the parish. There will also be a VIP lounge where cocktails will be served. George Nooks and Prince J, a Rising Stars contestant, are also billed for the show. Last year, the $20,000 profit raised from the event was donated to the RSCD, which has plans to repair, and renovate a section of their facility located at Millers Drive in Lucea, which had been destroyed by Hurricane Ivan in 2004. The RSCD is a non-government organisation that provides special care, guidance and education for children who are mentally and physically disabled. It has been operating in Lucea since 1996. The facility offers training in basic academics, such as recognising letters and colours, as well as skills, such as dressing, eating and bathing. Sponsors of this year's show include Reggae Drops, Jockey, Couples Swept Away, RIU Negril, Coco-la-Palm, and Hanover Charities.
