Forestry Dept hosts exhibition
(Jun-28-2007)
The Ministry of Agriculture's Forestry Department and the Hanover Parish Development Committee joined forces last week to stage a tree-distribution and forestry exhibition in recognition of the United Nation's Environment Programme's World Environment Day. During the exhibition, which was held in the Lucea bus park, more than 200 ornamental trees, including neem, Blue Mahoe, poui and cedar, along with informational material, were distributed to citizens who visited, including members of youth clubs, students, taxi operators and market vendors.
"This is one of the projects where we sensitise citizens as to the importance of trees, which are protectors and providers," said the Forestry Department's public awareness officer, Edward Richards. "We also used the opportunity to inform residents about our private planting programme, where we provide seedlings and trees to landowners free of cost, and give them technical assistance. Private landowners own most of the lands, which need protection. They have the plantable land and if we get them on board, this would be a fabulous thing for the conservation of the environment."
