Deputy Mayor Bertel Moore gives opening statements at monthly meeting of the Council
(Sep-17-2007)

Deputy Mayor Bertel Moore of the Westmoreland Parish Council in giving his opening statements at the monthly meeting of the Council held at the St Georgie's Anglican Church Hall, on Thursday September 13, 2007, where he congratulated the new Prime Minister, Hon Bruce Golding on his victory in the recently held election on September 3,.

He went on to congratulate all MP's who won their seats.

On the matter of local Government "I don't know what turn local Government has taken because in the Prime Minister appointment of Ministers and Ministries I do not see any Minister of Local Government appointed.

However the Deputy Mayor said I have now learnt from a letter sent to the Council my alga which states that Local Government is on its own so I am deeply concerned because I know that Local Government is the area that deals with the local people and we need to have a strong Local Government in order to deal with the business of the poor, for them to be able to survive".

On the matter of garbage collection a representative of the NWSMA speaking at the meeting apologise for the backlog of garbage collections across the parish for the past six weeks. He went on to say we are having some serious challenges as six of our units were out of service for sometime in August.

He was quick to point out "within the next two weeks we shall have the system at a manageable level." Turning to garbage disposal at the Savanna La Mar Market, he said skits are provided but on many occasions when people are cleaning or people having garbage these are not thrown inside the skits, he said he is imploring persons to put the garbage inside the skits and this makes it easier for the trucks to collect it when they come."

On the matter of fire hydrants Secretary Manager of the Westmoreland Parish Council, Mrs Patricia Sinclair-Stair informed the meeting that the council will be installing a fire hydrant on the grounds of the Savanna La Mar Infirmary for the first time at a cost of $500,000.00.
